What is a Cut Doctor?

Traditionally from the world of boxing, the “cut doctor” was the person who sat ringside during a fight and whose sole responsibility was to assess and manage any cuts that the boxer suffered as a result of the match.

Our Cut Doctors aren’t just here for boxers. We’re here for you.

What is Cut Doc?

Cut Doc is a laceration repair service for people who would prefer to avoid the Emergency Room but who still want to have their wound assessed and treated by ER experienced physicians.

This service is a collaboration between the team of providers at The Minor Illness & Injury Clinic on Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg, and the team of virtual healthcare providers at QDoc.

The goal of Cut Doc is to improve the experience of patients suffering from minor lacerations by connecting them with the expertise of Emergency Room physicians without the need to attend an Emergency Room.

Why did we start Cut Doc?

When people are injured with cuts and scrapes, it can be quite scary, making it hard for them to know where to go and what to do.

Sometimes cuts and related injuries can be quite serious and require a visit to the Emergency room.

Other times these injuries are not life or limb threatening but they still require medical attention to ensure optimal healing and prevent complication.

This is why most people end up going to their local Emergency Room for treatment of these injuries.

In a busy Emergency Department where there may be dozens of sick or injured people in need of medical attention, minor injuries have to be assigned a lower priority so that the doctors and nurses can ensure that the sickest and most injured patients get the immediate care they need.

This means that patients with minor cuts often face long waits in busy Emergency Rooms.

We want to provide an alternative to the Emergency Room for people injured with minor lacerations.

Our mission is to improve how people injured with minor cuts and scrapes experience healthcare.

Who can use Cut Doc?

Cut Doc is a service available to patients 16 years of age and older who have sustained a minor laceration (cut) that might require a medical closure, such as stitches, to ensure optimal healing.

Is there anyone who should not use Cut Doc?

While most people should be able to benefit from this service, it is not for everyone. There are a few absolutes that we must insist upon to ensure that each patient has the best outcome possible:

1. Patient must be able to consent to treatment. Patients who are intoxicated or patients who suffer from neurological impairments that will prevent them from being able to consent to their own treatment are better managed in an emergency room or urgent care centre.
2. Patient must be able to cooperate with their treatment. Patients with significant anxiety or other neurological impairment might be better served in an Urgent Care or Emergency Department where sedation could be offered.
3. Patient must be able to undergo a medical procedure involving the use of needles for the administration of local anesthetic (freezing medication). We are unable to provide sedation at this time.
   
   

Is Cut Doc covered by Manitoba Health?

Yes. A valid Manitoba Health card is required to access Cut Doc services free of charge.

What if I don’t have a valid Manitoba Health Card, but I have a valid health card from another Canadian province.

If you have a valid health card from another Canadian province that has a reciprocal payment agreement with Manitoba, then Cut Doc services will be covered under your provincial health coverage.

Unfortunately, the province of Quebec does not have such an agreement so visitors from Quebec will not be covered under their provincial health care insurance.

Visitors from Quebec or outside of Canada.

Visitors from Quebec or from places outside of Canada can still use the Cut Doc services, but you will need to pay directly for all services rendered.

We do not have the ability to direct-bill travel insurance companies, so payment is required at the time of service.

We will provide you with a detailed invoice and confirmation of payment so that you can submit directly to your insurer if applicable.
